Winter Vacation Preparation

Yes, it's time. Time for snow tires, winter coats, and last-chance leaf bagging. It's also time to make sure a few things inside your house are cared for, before taking off for winter vacation:

  • Check entrance doorway gaskets for air leaks. It's easy to check these in the cold and so worthwhile fixing on a warmer day.
  • Replace batteries in your smoke alarms.
  • Turn off the water supply to your outdoor taps from the inside.
  • Update your key-holder list with your alarm company. Make sure they know when you'll be away and who to call if the alarm goes off.
  • Re-key your locks once in a while. If you have bought a new house, that's a must-do. But if you haven't re-keyed your place in a few years, I think it's a good idea to do this...like changing your Internet passwords.
  • Change your pass codes on your home alarm just as you change your Internet passwords. Never use the same home alarm code as your bank password or anything else.
  • Check your home insurance policy. Do a really good evaluation of your policy to make sure it covers what you think it does and protect your valuables.
  • Let your credit card company know where you'll be out of town.
  • You may still have time to replace your passport before Christmas.
